Der Nordrhein-Westfälische Judo-Verband (NWJV) ist der mitgliederstärkste Mitgliedsverband im Deutschen Judo-Bund (DJB). Der NWJV ist außerdem über den Dachverband für Budotechniken Nordrhein-Westfalen Mitglied im Landessportbund NRW. Dem NWJV gehören rund 520 Vereine mit rund 40.000 Mitgliedern an. Der NWJV deckt mit seinen Vereinen eine breite Angebotspalette ab: Erfolgreiche Teilnehmer bei Olympischen Spielen, Wettkampfsport für alle Altersklassen, Ligabetrieb ab der Altersklasse U16, Gürtelprüfungen, Breitensport, Schulsport, Behindertensport, Judo spielend lernen im Vorschulalter, Bewegt ÄLTER werden mit JUDO, Kata-Wettbewerbe und vieles mehr.Judo ist eine japanische Kampfsportart, deren Wurzeln weit zurückreichen. Im Wettkampf geht es darum, den Gegner mit verschiedenen Techniken zunächst auf den Boden und dann zur Aufgabe zu zwingen. Judo ist dabei nicht nur ein Sport, sondern soll auch die Persönlichkeit stärken, weiterbilden und Werte vermitteln. Bestandteile sind Falltechnik, Wurftechniken, Bodentechniken, Selbstverteidigung, Kata … der „sanfte Weg“.
Der Nordrhein-Westfälische Judo-Verband wurde am 19. November 1952 als Nordrhein-Westfälischer Judo-Ring in Essen gegründet. An der Gründungsversammlung nahmen 13 Vereine teil. Zum Vorsitzenden wurde Heinrich Frantzen gewählt. Seit 1964 wurde die Arbeit des Nordrhein-Westfälischen Judo-Ringes und des Judo-Amateur-Verbandes Nordrhein-Westfalen unter dem Namen Nordrhein-Westfälischer Judo-Verband fortgesetzt.
Präsident des NWJV ist Peter Frese aus Wuppertal, Vizepräsidenten sind Hans-Werner Krämer aus Siegen und Andreas Kleegräfe aus Köln. Weiteres Präsidiumsmitglied ist Edgar Korthauer aus Essen als Präsident des Nordrhein-Westfälischen Dan-Kollegiums (NWDK).
