En France, le code postal est une suite de chiffres située au début (à la gauche) de la dernière ligne de l'adresse (nom de localité). Mis en place en 1964 par l'administration des PTT, prédécesseur de La Poste, son format était initialement un nombre à deux chiffres correspondant au code des départements utilisé pour l'immatriculation des véhicules automobiles, dit « numéro minéralogique ». Il a changé en 1972 pour passer à cinq chiffres.
Il existe un code postal pour chaque commune qui disposait en 1972 d'un bureau distributeur du courrier. Les communes n'ayant pas de tel bureau se sont vu attribuer les codes des bureaux distributeurs auxquelles elles étaient rattachées. Les 36 600 communes de France sont desservies par 6 300 codes postaux.
