دعای ندبه مشتمل بر اِستِغاثه (زاری و کمک‌خواستن) از امام زمان(عج) و تأسف‌خوردن بر غیبت آن حضرت و گریه از فراق ایشان است و ندبه نیز به همین معناست.دعای ندبه از دعاهای بسیار مشهور که از امام صادق(ع) نقل شده و مستحب است در چهار عید (فطر، قربان، غدیر و جمعه) خوانده شود. این دعا را علی بن طاووس در کتاب اقبال الاعمال ذکر کرده است. شیعیان این دعا را بیشتر در صبح‌های جمعه قبل از طلوع آفتاب، در فراق امام زمان(عج) می‌خوانند.
علامه مجلسی دعای ندبه را در کتاب‌های بحارالانوار و تحفة الزائر نقل کرده است و در مقدمه بحار به اعتبار سند ادعیه آن شهادت داده است.
خواندن دعای ندبه در چهار عید یعنی عید فطر، عید قربان، عید غدیر و روز جمعه مستحب است.
