عبد الله بن مسعود بن غافل بن حبيب بن شمخ بن فار بن مخزوم بن صاهلة بن كاهل بن الحارث بن تميم بن سعد بن هذيل بن مدركة بن إلياس بن مضر بن نزار .الإمام الحبر ، فقيه الأمة ، أبو عبد الرحمن الهذلي المكي المهاجري البدري ، حليف بني زهرة .
كان من السابقين الأولين ، ومن النجباء العالمين ، شهد بدرا ، وهاجر الهجرتين ، وكان يوم اليرموك على النفل ، ومناقبه غزيرة ، روى علما كثيرا .
حدث عنه أبو موسى ، وأبو هريرة ، وابن عباس ، وابن عمر ، وعمران بن حصين ، وجابر ، وأنس ، وأبو أمامة ، في طائفة من الصحابة ، وعلقمة ، [ ص: 462 ] والأسود ، ومسروق ، وعبيدة ، وأبو وائلة ، وقيس بن أبي حازم ، وزر بن حبيش ، والربيع ، بن خثيم ، وطارق بن شهاب ، وزيد بن وهب ، وولداه أبو عبيدة وعبد الرحمن ، وأبو الأحوص عوف بن مالك ، وأبو عمرو الشيباني ، وخلق كثير .
وروى عنه القراءة أبو عبد الرحمن السلمي ، وعبيد بن نضيلة ، وطائفة .
اتفقا له في الصحيحين على أربعة وستين ، وانفرد له البخاري بإخراج أحد وعشرين حديثا ، ومسلم بإخراج خمسة وثلاثين حديثا ، وله عند بقي بالمكرر ثماني مائة وأربعون حديثا .
قال قيس بن أبي حازم : رأيته آدم خفيف اللحم ، وعن عبيد الله بن عبد الله بن عتبة قال : كان عبد الله رجلا نحيفا ، قصيرا ، شديد الأدمة ، وكان لا يغير شيبه .
وروى الأعمش ، عن إبراهيم قال : كان عبد الله لطيفا ، فطنا .
قلت : كان معدودا في أذكياء العلماء .
وعن ابن المسيب قال : رأيت ابن مسعود عظيم البطن ، أحمش الساقين .
قلت : رآه سعيد لما قدم المدينة عام توفي سنة اثنتين وثلاثين وكان يعرف أيضا بأمه ، فيقال له : ابن أم عبد .
