پارچه‌ای پشمین (کِساء) پوشانید. امامان شیعه به این حدیث برای اثبات فضیلت و برتری خود برای به دست گرفتن
خلافت مسلمانان استناد کرده‌اند. متن حدیثی که در مفاتیح الجنان به نام حدیث کساء آمده، در بخش‌هایی متفاوت با
حدیثی است که در منابع کهن شیعی و سنی نقل شده است.

طبری در کتاب دلائل الامامة می‌گوید: مسلمانان اتفاق نظر دارند که همزمان با نزول آیه تطهیر پیامبر(ص)؛ امام
علی(ع)، فاطمه(س)، امام حسن(ع) و امام حسین(ع) را فراخواند و با کساء آنان را پوشاند و چنین دعا کرد «اللهم
هؤلاء أهلی فأذهب عنهم الرجس و طهرهم تطهیرا» خدایا اینان اهل بیت من هستند از آن‌ها پلیدی را دور کن و آن‌ها
را پاک گردان.
