Hazrat Osman, (579–17 June 656), was a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and the third of the Rashidun, or "Rightly Guided Caliphs." Born into a prominent Meccan clan, Banu Umayya of the Quraysh tribe, he played a major role in early Islamic history, succeeding Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (R.A) who died in office at the age of 59/60 years as caliph at the age of 64/65 years (the second-oldest ruler).
According to Sunni Muslims Hazrat Uthman (R.A) was married to Hazrat Ruqayyah (R.A), and then upon her death, married Hazrat Umm Kulthum (R.A), both of them being daughters of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W), which earned Hazrat Uthman (R.A) the honorific title Dhū al-Nurayn.

Under the leadership of Hazrat Uthman (R.A), the empire expanded into Fars (present-day Iran) in 650, and some areas of Khorasan (present-day Afghanistan) in 651. The empire's conquest of Armenia began by the 640s. His reign also saw widespread internal protests against his policies by the Muslim public that eventually led to armed revolt and his assassination.
Seven years after Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H), Hazrat Usman was born in Taif to the wealthy Umayyad (Banu Umayya) clan of the Quraysh tribe of Mecca. Hazrat Usman's father, Affan, died at a young age while travelling abroad, however, Hazrat Usman was left with a large inheritance. Hazrat Usman became a merchant, like his father. His business flourished, making him one of the richest men among the Qurayshi tribe. His mother was Arwa, daughter of Um Hakim bint Abdul Mutalib, the twin sister of Abdullah, father of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), making Hazrat Usman (R.A) Prophet Muhammad's (P.B.U.H) first cousin. She died before 610.
On returning from a business trip to Syria in 611, Hazrat Osman (R.A) found out that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W) had declared his mission. After a discussion with his friend Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A), Hazrat Osman decided to convert to Islam, and Hazrat AbuBakr (R.A) took him to Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) to declare his faith. Hazrat Usman thus became one of the earliest converts to Islam, following Hazrat Ali (R.A), Hazrat Zayd (R.A), Hazrat Abu Bakr Sidique (R.A) and a few others. His conversion to Islam angered his clan, the Banu Ummayyah, who strongly opposed Muhammad's teachings.
