A più di 150 anni dalla pubblicazione de “L’origine delle specie”, Charles Darwin continua ad ispirare il mondo della ricerca scientifica, non solo in campo biologico, e ad alimentare controversie. L’Università degli Studi di Trieste, il Museo Nazionale dell’Antartide - “Felice Ippolito” e il Centro Internazionale di Fisica Teorica “Abdus Salam” hanno voluto celebrare l’attualità del grande naturalista con la realizzazione di questo progetto multimediale, con l’augurio che possa contribuire a un maggiore coinvolgimento del pubblico verso queste tematiche. La premessa parte dall’intuizione di Darwin circa l’importanza del ruolo dell’ambiente nel favorire gli organismi viventi in grado di trasmettere il proprio successo evolutivo alle future generazioni e di come tale processo evolutivo continui, influenzato oggi anche dallo straordinario sviluppo economico e sociale dell’umanità.Il progetto multimediale è incentrato su temi attuali come lo sviluppo demografico, la tutela dell’ambiente, i cambiamenti climatici e la relazione tra cambiamenti ambientali locali ed eventi globali.
I luoghi visitati corrispondono a quattro già esplorati da Darwin: Inghilterra, Bahia, Galapagos e Australia; a questi si aggiungono l’Antartide e lo Spazio, ambienti estremi e in parte ancora inesplorati che forniscono infiniti spunti di riflessione e discussione.
