Merdeka Day in Malaysia (also known as Hari Merdeka, Hari Kebangsaan or National Day) is recorded on 31 August 1957. At 9.30a.m. on this day, Malaya as it was then known was declared independent from the British Empire. The declaration was read by the first Chief Minister of Malaya, Tunku Abdul Rahman at the Merdeka Stadium. There is actually another day, the 16th of September 1963, that is marked as “Malaysia Day” – this was when Sabah and Sarawak federated with the existing Malayan states to form the Federation of Malaysia.
