Continental Software and Central Technologies (SCT) developed a cloud-based solution to make road traffic safer and, in particular, to reduce the accident risk for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and scooter drivers.The digital safety assist creates a digital protective shield virtually surrounding all participating road users. If this protective shield is "broken through" by another road user, the solution recognizes the dangerous situation and warns all affected road users concerned.
The prerequisite is the installation of an app on a smart phone or a vehicle telematics box, which provides relevant data to predict accident risks and sends out a warning in case such an accident prediction takes place.
The system has already been successfully tested in Regensburg, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Singapore and Korea. In addition to collision warning between vulnerable road users the application also supports speed limit notifications as well as danger zone warnings.
The collision warning is based on satellite positioning (GPS), acceleration sensors, mobile communications and cloud computing. Road users (cars, cyclists, pedestrians, etc.) transmit their position and speed to the cloud via mobile communications. The service is strictly adhering to privacy regulations. Using historic data it calculates the trajectories for the next five seconds and sends a warning to those involved if a collision is imminent. This allows users to react and support them to prevent an accident.
