금강경 [金剛經]

금강반야바라밀경 · 금강반야경이라고도 한다. 인도 사위국을 배경으로 제자 수보리를 위하여 설한 경전으로, 한곳에 집착하여 마음을 내지 말고 항상 머무르지 않는 마음을 일으키고, 모양으로 부처를 보지 말고 진리로서 존경하며, 모든 모습은 모양이 없으며 이렇게 본다면 곧 진리인 여래를 보게 된다고 하였다. 이 경은 현장(玄奘)이 번역한 《대반야경》 600권 중 제577권의 능단금강분(能斷金剛分)과 같은 것이나 《대반야경》이 성립되기 이전에 이 부분만 독립된 경전으로 유통되었다고 보는 것이 학계의 통설이다. 이 사실은 일찍이 인도에서 무착(無着)과 세친(世親)에 의해 그 주석서가 저술되고 중국에서도 구마라습(鳩摩羅什)에 의해 번역서가 나온 이래 다른 많은 번역서가 나온 데서도 알 수 있다.

이 경은 산스크리트 원본도 현존하며 한역 6가지 외에 서장역도 있으며 최근에는 영어 · 독일어 · 프랑스어 등으로도 번역되어 서양학계에 가장 널리 알려진 경전이다. 또한 이 경에 대한 주석서는 인도 · 중국 · 한국 · 티베트 등에 걸쳐 800여 가지가 된다고 하며 불교의 모든 학파를 막론하고 이 경에 대한 관심은 지대하였다. 그것은 바로 이 《금강경》이 적절한 분량으로 읽기도 쉬우면서 깊은 대승불교의 진수를 드러내었기 때문이다.
