Description
Program penyelidikan dan pembangunan teknologi penternakan lebah kelulut telah dimulakan pada tahun 1990. Pada masa itu lebah kelulut hanya digunakan sebagai agen pendebungaan sahaja. Melihat kepada potensi lebah kelulut boleh menghasilkan madu yang banyak, maka satu program telah diaktifkan untuk mengkaji perilaku lebah kelulut. Pada tahun 2008 program ini telah memberikan hasil dua spesies kelulut (Trigona itama, Trigona thoracica) yang dapat mengeluarkan hasil 1kg sebulan. Penyelidikan tidak terhenti begitu sahaja apabila penyelidikan mengenai pemecahan koloni berjaya dilakukan pada tahun 2010. MARDI juga melakukan kajian untuk melihat khasiat madu lebah kelulut.
