امام حسن مجتبی (۳-۵۰ق) دومین امام شیعیان که ۱۰ سال (۴۰-۵۰ق) امام و حدود ۷ ماه خلیفه مسلمانان بود. اهل سنت او را آخرین خلیفه از خلفای راشدین دانسته‌اند.امام حسن مجتبی نخستین فرزند امام علی(ع) و فاطمه زهرا(س) و نخستین نوه پیامبر(ص) است. بنابر گزارش‌های تاریخی، نام « حسن » را پیامبر(ص) برای او برگزید و او را بسیار دوست داشت. او هفت سال از عمر خود را با پیامبر(ص) همراه بود و در بیعت رضوان و ماجرای مباهله با مسیحیان نجران حضور داشت.
امام حسن مجتبی یکی از اصحاب کسا است که آیه تطهیر درباره آنان نازل شد و شیعیان آنان را معصوم می‌دانند. آیه اطعام و آیه مودت و آیه مباهله نیز درباره امام حسن مجتبی و پدر و مادر و برادرش نازل شده است.
حسن بن علی در ۲۱ رمضان سال ۴۰ هجری، و پس از شهادت امام علی(ع)، به امامت رسید و در همان روز، بیش از چهل هزار نفر با او برای خلافت بیعت کردند.
