APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) didefinisikan dalam Malaysian Qualifications Framework 2nd Edition (MQA, 2017) sebagai proses verifikasi pencapaian seseorang individu bagi satu set hasil pembelajaran yang diperoleh melalui pembelajaran formal, bukan formal dan tidak formal tanpa mengambil kira masa dan tempat. APEL adalah satu proses sistematik yang melibatkan identifikasi, dokumentasi dan penilaian pembelajaran berasaskan pengalaman terdahulu.Tujuan APEL
APEL diperkenalkan bagi tujuan memberi peluang dan akses kepada mereka yang mempunyai pengalaman kerja tetapi kurang kelayakan atau tiada kelayakan akademik untuk menyambung pengajian di Institusi Pendidikan Tinggi.
Kerangka Kelayakan Malaysia (Malaysian Qualifications Framework, MQF) menerusi Akta Agensi Kelayakan Malaysia (Malaysian Qualifications Agency - MQA) 2007 (Akta 679) telah memberikan komitmen untuk mengiktiraf pembelajaran terdahulu sebaik mungkin. Pembelajaran yang telah diperoleh melalui pelbagai jenis pengalaman yang berlaku dalam kehidupan individu akan dikenal pasti dan akan diberi pengiktirafan selayaknya. Melalui APEL akan membolehkan individu maju dalam konteks pembelajaran sepanjang hayat, ini seterusnya meluaskan mobiliti pelajar dan penyertaan pelajar dewasa dalam pendidikan tinggi.
APEL [a.k.a APEL.Access – APEL.A] dilaksanakan di Malaysia bagi tujuan kemasukan ke Pemberi Pendidikan Tinggi (PPT). Penilaian APEL.A telah dibuka untuk EMPAT (4) tahap kelayakan iaitu:
1. Sijil (APEL T-3);
2. Diploma (APEL T-4);
3. Sarjana Muda (APEL T-6); dan
4. Sarjana (APEL T-7).
Syarat Kelayakan Masuk melalui APEL:
1. Warganegara Malaysia, berpengalaman dalam bidang berkaitan, berumur:
a. 19 tahun bagi program Sijil
b. 20 tahun bagi program Diploma
c. 21 tahun bagi program Sarjana Muda
d. 30 tahun + STPM/diploma/setara bagi program Sarjana
serta
2. Lulus penilaian APEL iaitu Ujian Aptitud, Portfolio dan Temuduga (tahap Sarjana sahaja)
