Founded four and a half decades ago, it has prolifically grown through its vibrant intellectual activism in the campuses in Kerala and needs no introduction in the present day Kerala public sphere. MSM works as the student offshoot of Kerala Nadwathul Mujahideen, the reformist Muslim mass movement which evolved in 1950 at the hands of the erstwhile leaders of Kerala Muslim Aikya Sangham, the historic Renaissance initiative which attempted the Islamization as well as modernisation of the Mappilas in Malabar in the 1920s.
KNM thus is informed by a proud lineage of renowned social reformers and freedom fighters including Vakkom Moulavi, KM Moulavi, KM Seethi, Muhammad Abdurrahman and E Moithu Moulavi.MSM, true to its heritage, fought hard against the superstitions and decadent practices innovated by the local priesthood in the name of religion and enlightened the Muslim students with the true guidance of Qur'an and Sunnah in matters of creed and jurisprudence. It debated wonderfully with the atheists and communists who are very visible with their dynamic presence in the colleges in Kerala and convinced numerous Muslim students about the credibility of their faith.
MSM played a major role in safeguarding the Muslim students in Kerala from the evils of western lifestyle ranging from sexual promulgation to drug addiction. And communicating Islam to non-Muslim students is a constant focus of the organisation. MSM toughly resisted all moves to misinterpret Islam to the lines of terrorism and extremism and encouraged Muslim students to have the positive democratic engagement in the political arena. MSM conducts conferences, seminars, lectures, open forums, debates, exhibitions etc to achieve these ends, and has generated an enormous amount of literature expounding its ideals.
