HEARTS of SPACE is the original NPR national showcase for the best electronic, acoustic, and ambient space music. Listeners describe the show as ‘addictive,’ ‘essential,’ and ‘sublime’—a, consistently high quality curated experience of emotionally significant music that goes far beyond simple relaxation.Our new, completely rewritten 4th generation Hearts of Space app offers Android users free, anytime access to our new shows, up to four (4) times each week. Shows change and the free play allotment refreshes on Friday nights around midnight Pacific Time.
You can now browse and SEARCH the entire Hearts of Space collection of PROGRAMS and ALBUMS within the app, and make and edit personal PLAYLISTS and FAVORITES (now a 3-star rating that also allows you to block any program you don’t want to hear). New in-app SETTINGS allow you to customize your HOS “home page” and player content. Streams sound great in high quality AAC format, with glitchless audio backgrounding, Bluetooth support, and device hardware integration.
SUBSCRIBERS gain expanded levels of access to music, choice, and interactivity. One subscription works on all your devices and all but prehistoric laptops and desktops. For a seamless musical experience, subscribers can turn voiceover narration off, and use interactive stream navigation, a sleep timer, and autorepeat.

• FULL SERVICE provides maximum access, choice, and interactivity. It’s ideal for both targeted listening and continuous background music. You can SEARCH, BROWSE, and enjoy unlimited plays of the entire Hearts of Space universe of music: over 1,300 PROGRAMS, 150+ classic ALBUMS in our genres, 11 continuous play, interactive CHANNELS, and THIS WEEK’s show. It includes all interactive features—our random select feature SURPRISE ME, a sleep timer, autorepeat, and shuffling of PLAYLISTS.
• STANDARD SERVICE is a budget-conscious plan for continuous background music by genre. With slightly less interactivity and choice, it includes unlimited play of THIS WEEK’s show and all 11 full-time CHANNELS (plus a 12th at winter Holiday time) containing 12 selected programs each, for a total of 133 shows. Each channel drops and adds 1 program per hour, resulting in a complete refresh every 12 hours. Nine of the channels are genre-based, the RECENT channel features the 12 newest programs, and the eclectic ALL ARCHIVE channel draws from the entire collection. On all channels, you can skip to the next show, repeat a previous show, choose specific shows within channels, and turn the voiceover narration off or on.
• BASIC SERVICE gives unlimited play of THIS WEEK’s show anytime during the week it’s featured, an auto-repeat function, voiceover choice, and the ability to browse and sample everything in the collection.

Beginning as a pioneering late-night radio show in the San Francisco Bay area in 1973, the program continues to offer “slow music for fast times.” Hearts of Space evolved its own unique format — a calm, space-creating mix of ambient, electronic, world, new age, classical and experimental music from around the world and across the centuries.
The breadth and depth of our musical focus, intensively curated into thematic programs, is the secret of our longevity. Our weekly show has been heard by millions, distributed on the NPR network since 1983 to over 300 U.S. public radio stations, and daily on XM Satellite radio from 2001 to 2010.
Launched in January 2001, We were one of the first independent music producers to offer an online streaming service. While we continue to serve our radio network, our main focus today is our web service and mobile apps.

Q: If I install an APK from this website, will I be able to update the app from the Play Store?

2 ★Crashes after a few minutes unless it's in the foreground. Doesn't support controls on lock screen. No complaints about sound quality. If HOS would just make its website work in Android instead of requiring this app, all these problems would be gone.
1 ★It loads but fails to connect. It's worse now than before. I'm using a Galaxy Note 10 plus and have the latest software update but it just doesn't work on Android. I'm a long time listener on Sunday nights but I'd like to do more.
1 ★this app has stopped working on android samsung tab a in early december 2018 (after recent samsung software and android software updates. app does not open, get a black blank screen. HOS is working on it, aware of issue. before this problem would rate this app 5 stars
5 ★Been listening since 70's. About time got on my smartphone. KSMU local NPR station does a great job.
1 ★opens to the Adobe Air splash screen then just black. no loading, no network activity, and no change! a shame because the music is so good. I have to listen on the website only - the app is totally broken.
1 ★This new app is a big step backwards. I can sign in on my phone, but programs stop streaming after a few minutes. My tablet still works, which is the only reason I haven't dropped my subscription.
1 ★Unfortunately, does not run on Pixel 2 with Android Q. Responds same as reported by another reviewer with Samsung Tab A, hopefully same issue and will be resolved sooner rather than later (subbed to HoS to listen on phone before seeing if would run on phone)

4 ★Forgot my password, but couldn't change my password from the app - kept saying it changed but then the app wouldn't let me sign in. Had to use the website on my PC to change it, then was able to log in to the Android app.
2 ★Time Warp 2006... this app looks and feels ancient. No access to full archive from app, desktop access requires Flash! This is 2018. Functionality woefully limited.
