The Play Store installs APKs it downloads from Google's servers, and sideloading from a site like ApkClean.net goes through a very similar process, except you're the one performing the downloading and initiating the installation (sideloading). 2 ★Most of the puzzles have stopped downloading. Mainly my favorite puzzle (Sheffer) hasn't downloaded since mid November! I've given ample time for the developer to fix before writing this review! I am now using Alphacross to do the daily puzzles, that Shortyz can't get, even though I don't like the platform of the app as much as I like Shortyz! Please fix this so I can give 5 Stars!

2 ★UPDATE: Like others have said, the app stopped downloading the puzzles I most wanted to play beginning in November 2018. But, here's something of a workaround. You CAN download OLDER puzzles. So I started back at 1/1/2018 and I'm able to download the Joseph, Sheffer, and Jonesin puzzles I want for each of those days prior to November. Of course many I have worked before, but with aging memory they all seem new ;-).

3 ★up until a few days ago I would have given shortyz crosswords five stars. Now the program runs very slow except when entering text. Something has changed, I have not installed any new apps that might conflict with it. I am running Android version 5.1.1. I love this app! If anyone can fix this or knows what's going on please post!
3 ★Every now and then, the app doesn't save progress of puzzles.
3 ★Love the app. Have had it for years. Just now it has started to freeze (when opening, scrolling puzzles, and even solving puzzles). I closed it and cleared the cache. Still the same thing when I tried to use it again. I'll uninstall and re-install and see if that fixes it.
4 ★Love this app but my NYT access keeps disappearing even though I have a subscription. Can't navigate the settings to reactivate the connection. Very frustrated!
1 ★Something's gone wrong with Shorty'z. Loved it for years, especially because it let me download NYT puzzles from my subscription there. A better solving environment than the NYT app - cursor arrows, one-touch switching between down and across. But downloads stopped April 29 and my report of the problem to the author brought no response. Orphanware?
4 ★Update: Back to 4 stars! Reinstalled and if I change the keyboard to any option other than Native, it works like a champ. I'd prefer the native keyboard but the alternative is okay and, more importantly, works with this new Android release. So happy to have this app back! (Previous:) Upgraded to Android 10 and now the keyboard doesn't work. Uninstalled and reinstalled hoping that would help, now it won't download puzzles at all. I used to enjoy this app but, sadly, will have to uninstall it.
5 ★This is a fantastic free crossword app. I use it almost every day, and love it for long flights. I enjoyed chasing the achievements as well. I've noticed very small issues a couple times, but I really couldn't ask for better on a free app. It works nearly as well as the most expensive options. Thank you for making and continuing to maintain this app!
3 ★I've loved this app for years (5 stars) but since August, I can't download NYT crosswords, which are the only ones I do (reduction to 3 stars). Emailed the developer last month and didn't hear back. Tried again today. Great app that I'd be willing to pay for, if only it worked currently.
