चाणक्य का जन्म एक घोर निर्धन परिवार में हुआ था. अपने उग्र और गूढ़ स्वभाव के कारण वे ‘कौटिल्य’ भी कहलाये. उनका एक नाम संभवत: ‘विष्णुगुप्त’ भी था. चाणक्य ने उस समय के महान शिक्षा केंद्र ‘तक्षशिला’ में शिक्षा पाई थी. 14 वर्ष के अध्ययन के बाद 26 वर्ष की आयु में उन्होंने अपनी समाजशास्त्र, राजनीती और अर्थशास्त्र की शिक्षा पूर्ण की और नालंदा में उन्होंने शिक्षण कार्य भी किया. वे राजतंत्र के प्रबल समर्थक थे. उन्हें ‘भारत का मेकियावली’ के नाम से भी जाना जाता है.ऐसी किंवदन्ती है कि एक बार मगध के राजदरबार में किसी कारण से उनका अपमान किया गया था, तभी उन्होंने नंद – वंश के विनाश का बीड़ा उठाया था. उन्होंने चन्द्रगुप्त मौर्य को राजगद्दी पर बैठा कर वास्तव में अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी कर ली तथा नंद – वंश को मिटाकर मौर्य वंश की स्थापना की. चाणक्य देश की अखण्डता के भी अभिलाषी थे, इसलिये उन्होंने चंद्रगुप्त व्दारा यूनानी आक्रमणकारियों को भारत से बाहर निकलवा दिया और नंद – वंश के अत्याचारों से पीड़ित प्रजा को भी मुक्ति दिलाई.
आचार्य चाणक्य भारतीय इतिहास के सर्वाधिक प्रखर कुटनीतिज्ञ माने जाते है. उन्होंने ‘अर्थशास्त्र’ नामक पुस्तक में अपने राजनैतिक सिध्दांतों का प्रतिपादन किया है, जिनका महत्त्व आज भी स्वीकार किया जाता है.
