Las abejas nativas del área maya carecen de aguijón. Una de las especies, la Melipona beecheii, ha sido manejada por los mayas desde hace más de dos mil años; la tecnología ancestral para su cultivo se conoce con el nombre de meliponicultura maya. Esta aplicación bilingüe maya y español tiene como objetivo fomentar la conservación de esta tradición.La aplicación “Abejas mayas” incluye dos modalidades: realidad virtual que brinda la opción de conocer detalladamente a las abejas Melipona beecheii, llamadas en maya yucateco como Xunaan Kab, su colmena y sus productos. Además, se puede cosechar miel de Melipona beecheii, de manera virtual, con la técnica que los mayas han practicado desde la época prehispánica. La realidad aumentada permite al usuario ingresar a una colonia de estas abejas y viajar por su interior, recorrer el área de cría y el área de almacenamiento donde las abejas depositan el néctar transformado en miel y guardan el polen recolectado.
