Description
The Aral Sea drying out and the Aralkum desert appearing in its stead is one of the most fascinating and frightening examples for desertification processes within our lifetimes. The app "Aralkum - A Lake Disappears" accompanies the work sheet "Aralkum - A Lake Disappears" which can be downloaded at http://columbuseye.uni-bonn.de/english/ . The app shows a recent video of the area, taken from the ISS, as well as the Aral Sea's development in the years 2000-2016 in a landsat time series.The app only works in combination with the work sheet "Aralkum - A Lake Disappears" by Columbus Eye. After the app is installed on the smartphone and is started, the backward camera is switched on automatically. When the camera is directed at the marker images in the work sheet, they are superimposed with videos. As soon as you tap the images on the smartphone screen, the videos start or pause.
Columbus Eye is a project by Bonn University and Ruhr-University Bochum and is supported by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy [grant number 50 JR 1307].
