শবে কদর আরবিতে লাইলাতুল কদর। এর অর্থ অতিশয় সম্মানিত ও মহিমান্বিত রাত বা পবিত্র রজনী। আরবি ভাষায় ‘লাইলাতুন’ অর্থ হলো রাত্রি বা রজনী এবং ‘কদর’ শব্দের অর্থ সম্মান, মর্যাদা, মহাসম্মান। এ ছাড়া এর অন্য অর্থ হলো—ভাগ্য, পরিমাণ ও তাকদির নির্ধারণ করা।[১] ইসলাম ধর্ম অনুসারে, এ রাতে ইসলামের মহানবী, মুহাম্মদের অনুসারীদের সম্মান বৃদ্ধি করা হয় এবং মানবজাতির ভাগ্য পুনর্নির্ধারণ করা হয়। তাই মুসলমানদের কাছে এই রাত অত্যন্ত পুণ্যময় ও মহাসম্মানিত হিসেবে পরিগণিত। কুরানের বর্ননা অনুসারে, আল্লাহ এই রাত্রিকে অনন্য মর্যাদা দিয়েছেন এবং এই একটি মাত্র রজনীর উপাসনা হাজার মাসের ইবাদতের চেয়েও অধিক সওয়াব অর্জিত হওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দেওয়া হয়েছে। প্রতিবছর মাহে রমজানে এই মহিমান্বিত রজনী লাইলাতুল কদর মুসলিমদের জন্য সৌভাগ্য বয়ে আনে বলে তারা বিশ্বাস করে।মুসলমানদের জন্য অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ন এই রাত সর্ম্পকে হাদিস শরীফে অসংখ্য বর্ণনা রয়েছে। এমনকি মুসলমানদের প্রধান ধর্মী গ্রন্থ আল কোরআনে সূরা ক্বদর নামে স্বতন্ত্র একটি পূর্ণ সুরা নাজিল হয়েছে। এই সুরায় শবে কদরের রাত্রিকে হাজার মাসের চেয়ে উত্তম বলে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।
কদরের রাত্রের যাবতীয় কাজের ইঙ্গিত দিয়ে এ রজনীর অপার বৈশিষ্ট্য সম্পর্কে আল্লাহ তাআলা পবিত্র কোরআনের অন্যত্র ঘোষণা করেছেন,
হা-মীম! শপথ সুস্পষ্ট কিতাবের, নিশ্চয়ই আমি তা (কোরআন) এক মুবারকময় রজনীতে অবতীর্ণ করেছি, নিশ্চয়ই আমি সতর্ককারী। এ রাতে প্রত্যেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় স্থিরীকৃত হয়।
