বাঙালির হাতে বাংলা ব্যাকরণ রচনার সূচনা হয় উনিশ শতকের গোড়ায়। ১৮০৭ সালে প্রকাশিত মৃত্যুঞ্জয় বিদ্যালঙ্কারের বাঙ্গালা ভাষার ব্যাকরণ হলো বাঙালির লেখা প্রথম সহজ বাংলা ব্যাকরণ।বাংলা ভাষাকে সংস্কৃত থেকে একেবারে আলাদা ভাষার মর্যাদা দিয়ে বাংলা ব্যাকরণ রচনায় প্রথম উদ্যোগী হন রামমোহন রায়। তিনি প্রথমে বাংলা দ্বিতীয়পত্র লেখেন ইংরেজি ভাষায়, Bengalee Grammar in the English Language ১৮২৬ সালে। পরে বাংলা ভাষায় লেখেন গৌড়ীয় ব্যাকরণ ১৮৩৩ সালে। চলিত ভাষাকে উপেক্ষা করে কেবল সাধু ভাষায় বাংলা বই লেখাকে রামমোহন সংগত বলে মনে করেননি। তাঁর গৌড়ীয় ব্যাকরণেই প্রথম বাংলা ভাষার প্রকৃত স্বরূপ চিহ্নিত করার প্রয়াস লক্ষ করা গেছে। এরপর উনিশ শতকে অনেকগুলো বাংলা ব্যাকরণ বই লেখা হয়েছে। এগুলি ছিল প্রথাবদ্ধ এবং সংস্কৃত ব্যাকরণঘেঁষা। তবে এগুলোর মধ্যে উনিশ শতকের মধ্যভাগে লেখা শ্যামাচরণ সরকারের বাঙ্গালা ব্যাকরণ (১৮৫২) বইটি ব্যাকরণ-ভাবনার ক্ষেত্রে উল্লেখযোগ্য। আজ বিসিএস প্রস্তুতি, মাধ্যমিক, উচ্চমাধ্যমিক সহ বিভিন্ন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভর্তি পরীক্ষা সহ বিভিন্ন চাকরির পরীক্ষা দেয়ার জন্য বাংলা বই ডাউনলোড করে ব্যাকরণ শিখছে।

These were customary and Sanskrit grammarians. But in the middle of the nineteenth century Banga grammar (1852) of Shyamacharan government written in the middle of this book is a reference to grammar.
