Description
Hive is a board game from John Yianni with a difference. There is no board! The pieces are added to the playing area thus creating the board. As more and more pieces are added the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee.The soldier ants battle to keep control of the outside of the hive, whilst the Beetles climb up to dominate the top. Spiders moving into holding positions as the Grass Hoppers jump in for the kill. Keeping one eye on the hive and the other on your opponents reserves, the tension builds as one wrong move will see your Queen Bee quickly engulfed... game over!
The main features of this application are:
-Ability to play against Artificial Intelligence with 6 Computer levels. The expert level is really challenging and only advanced players should be able to beat it.
-Online mode shared with https://en.boardgamearena.com (the largest boardgame table in the world!). Turn-based and real-time games are available.
-2 players mode (Pass and Play)
-Possibility to save/load multiple ongoing games
-Game notation can be copied to clipboard
-Undos are possible and unlimited
-Hint system (activable in the menu) to see how the AI would play in your situation
-Tutorial to help learning the rules or possibility to download rules as pdf

5 ★I love almost everything about this game. For the online integration, I cannot figure out how to confirm my move. Please advise. If this were fixed it would be five stars. EDIT: I can confirm that this has been fixed. Love the app!
5 ★Love the actual game. This is great to test myself because of 6 levels of difficulty. And it helps you to work out which moves may be illegal!
4 ★Interesting game - seems like chess but adds a very distinct flavour. The app is light, clean and has no ads. The AI offers a good challenge too.
4 ★The AI is fun and this is definitely the board game i enjoy, though the app itself has a few bugs. Off the top of my head, it inconsistently uses the background I have set depending on if I am coming from an online game, and it always makes me login (it remembers credentials). The chat is easy to miss (it would be nice to notify on messages). It would be nice if it was FOSS like LiChess, it would be nice to be able to contribute back! If you already like hive this is definitely the app to use.
5 ★I really like the game and the AI is challenging for me. A couple of quick suggestions. When I accidentally touch the opponent's piece is says "wait your turn" even if it's my turn. Similarly I'd like to be able to move my view of the board during the AI's turn but trying to do so results in the same message. Actually, being able to toggle all the messages off would be nice. I'd also say the icon could use an update.
4 ★I love the app! I do think it would be good if the difficult/expert levels didn't have the potential moves outlined. At that point you don't need that feature and it makes you think more to have that removed. This is date time for my husband and I after baby is asleep...with the app I can get in extra practice by myself :) very well-made app. My husband pointed out he feels as if we are being nickeled and dimed in order to get the extra pieces.
5 ★Great game, of course the real one is much better, but is the closest you can get. AI is very strong and can catch you off guard if you are not on your toes. A big recommended from my part. A couple suggestions: multiplayer online, slightly improve graphics to closer match real pieces (right now I find hard to focus bigger hives) and maybe Apple port (would love to play it on my iPad. I definitively plan to buy the expansions to support developer. Well deserved and thank you for an amazing game!
3 ★Great game, but loses connection online mid-game a lot even on great wifi. It will rubber band lag and revert your move and come up with an error in the middle of a tournament. I tried refreshing after, but sometimes it continues over and over again. To the point where i just give up playing it. Its very fun to play, but i mostly stop playing it from frustration of errors than anything else. It would be nice to make custom game times as well or watch current games of tournaments, etc.
4 ★A wonderful game and app. But I had a bad experience when a game was cancelled because the app is apparently missing autosave after every turn. Thus when I had to check something, the OS unloaded the app from memory on the background and the game was lost. I would also like that a click on an already selected piece DESELECTS it. Right now I have to click outside play area which is counter-intuitive. I will fix this review and buy an extension when the author addresses the issues.
5 ★Exactly the same as the board game. Simple controls, great tutorials and no ads. The monetization is very reasonable, the 3 expansion pieces are $2 each. These pieces add a lot to the game, but it's still very fun without them. The AI is totally competent on normal. I haven't tried online play quite yet so I'm not sure how that performs, but it's worth a download whether you've played the board game or not before.
4 ★Great implementation, great gameplay and an excellent way to learn the game or hone your skills. AI seems solid and the game plays quite well. Pricing for the expansion pieces are pretty up there IMO (roughly $8 CAD for the lot) so it'd be nice if this had a more reasonable purchase price for the expansions or a discounted price for purchasing all at once. (Edited pricing info and initial star rating as I was mistaken about expansion costs at first)
5 ★I absolutely LOVE the true boardless game of Hive- it is one of my favorite abstract strategy games. I was elated to discover Hive with AI, and I love that it has a two player mode. It helps newbies learn how and where the creepy crawlies move and can be legally positioned. I still prefer the tactile sensation of the actual game, but this version does the tile game justice. Very well done!
