Kitabnya, Tafsir Ibnu Katsir, merupakan kitab paling penting yang ditulis dalam masalah tafsir al-Qur'anul 'Adziim, paling agung, paling banyak diterima dan tersebar di tengah umat ini.Beliau adalah Imam yang mulia Abul Fida' 'Imaduddin Isma'il bin "umar bih Katsir al-Quraasyi al-Bushrawi yang berasal dari kota Bashrah, Irak, kemudian menetap, belajar dan mengajar di Damaskus. Dilahirkan di Mijdal, sebuah tempat di kota Bashrah pda tahun 701 H (1302 M).
Ayah beliau adalah seorang khatib di kota itu. Ayahnya meninggal ketika beliau baru berusia 4 tahun. Kemudian beliau diasuh oleh kakaknya, Syaikh 'Abdul Wahhab dan dialah yang mendidik beliau di usia dininya. Kemudian beliau pindah ke Damaskus, negeri Syam yand dijaga pada tahun 706 H, ketika beliau berusia 5 tahun.
