The ASE Auto Maintenance and Light Repair (G1) is a test developed in response to requests from the industry for a certification category specifically for entry-level and maintenance technicians. It represents the first step on the path for automotive professionals to advance in their areas of ASE certification as they grow in knowledge and experience and move on to the traditional ASE tests in Auto, Truck, Collision, Parts, etc. Maintenance and light repair services currently make up about 70% of all work being done in shops across the United States, and this test is designed to measure knowledge of the skills necessary to be proficient in this type of bumper-to-bumper service.
Certification in Auto Maintenance & Light Repair is slightly different from other ASE certifications. If you pass the G1 exam, and have at least one year of hands-on working experience in auto maintenance and light repair (half may be met by appropriate vocational training), you will be certified in this area. The G1 test contains 55 scored questions, plus 10 unscored research questions, and you will have 1 1/2 hours (90 minutes) to complete it. The questions, written by service industry experts familiar with all aspects of maintenance and light repair, are entirely job-related. They test knowledge of the skills you need to do the job; theoretical knowledge is not covered.
The auto maintenance and light repair test involves the following components:

• Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: 4 questions
• Manual Drive Train and Axles: 6 questions
• Suspension and Steering: 13 questions
• Brakes: 11 questions
• Electrical: 8 questions
• Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning: 4 questions
