Tantangan bagi perguruan tinggi dan lembaga penelitian dan pengembangan (litbang) di Indonesia, termasuk IPB, saat ini dan ke depan adalah melakukan alih teknologi atau komersialisasi hasil riset atau inovasi/teknologi yang telah dihasilkan. Inovasi IPB yang berpotensi secara ekonomi dan/atau siap untuk diaplikasikan ke industri atau masyarakat perlu dipromosikan atau didiseminasikan ke berbagai pihak terkait (swasta, pemerintah/pemerintah daerah dan masyarakat luas). Hal ini perlu dilakukan agar inovasi IPB memberikan dampak positif bagi masyarakat, memberikan lapangan kerja dan membentuk wirausaha. Keberhasilan kegiatan promosi dan komersialiasi inovasi IPB diharapkan akan berdampak pada income generating IPB dan lebih luas menjadikan Indonesia mandiri teknologi dan pertumbuhan ekonomi nasional dapat ditingkatkan dengan memanfaatkan inovasi dalam negeri.Sebagai perguruan tinggi berbasis riset, Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) telah banyak menghasilkan riset, baik riset dasar maupun riset terapan (inovasi) untuk diaplikasikan di industri dan masyarakat. Dalam 8 (delapan) tahun terakhir (2008-2015), IPB mendominasi daftar Karya Inovatif Indonesia Paling Prospektif hasil seleksi Bussiness Innovation Center (BIC), dimana dari total 828 inovasi Indonesia paling prospektif sebanyak 323 atau sekitar 39% inovasi merupakan karya inovatif yang dihasilkan oleh para inovator IPB. Untuk invensi berbasis paten, total kumulatif aplikasi paten IPB sampai dengan tahun 2015 adalah 322 aplikasi paten, yang 75 diantaranya merupakan patent granted.
Sebagai Perguruan Tinggi Negeri berstatus Badan Hukum (PTN BH), secara terencana dan sistematis IPB terus melakukan upaya-upaya komersialisasi terhadap hasil riset/inovasi. IPB mendirikan PT Bogor Life Science & Technology (BLST) pada tahun 2003 sebagai holding company yang diberi mandat untuk mengantarkan sains, teknologi dan inovasi yang dikembangkan IPB ke tataran komersial. Untuk itu, IPB mengajak stakeholder terkait (industri, pemerintah, masyarakat luas) bekerjasama dengan IPB mengembangkan berbagai inovasi yang bermanfaat bagi masyarakat untuk pembangunan Indonesia yang lebih baik.
