De omroep is in 1985 opgericht en bestaat in 2020 dus alweer 35 jaar. Daarmee is de omroep een van de oudste lokale omroepen van Nederland. RTV SLOS is 24 uur per dag, 7 dagen per week in de lucht.
Er worden informatieve programma’s gemaakt en ook sport heeft een groot aandeel in de programmering. Verder zijn er muziekprogramma’s met een hoog hitparade gehalte, waaronder ook veel Nederlandstalig maar ook streektaal, country en blues krijgen hun aandacht. De omroep staat ook sterk met een echt Hardrock programma dat over de hele wereld beluisterd wordt.
RTV SLOS is regelmatig aanwezig bij evenementen in Steenwijkerland. Daar wordt live op locatie radio gemaakt zoals bij grote sportevenementen als de Klim van Steenwijk, het Wielerspektakel en het Biebtoernooi. Het Dicky Woodstock festival, opening vaarseizoen Blokzijl en het Waterevent behoren tevens tot de lijst van grote locatie uitzendingen. Ook kleinere evenementen worden bezocht met het team van RTV Slos.
De toekomst van de omroep ligt in het televisie maken. In de aanloop naar de gemeenteraadsverkiezing van 2014 zijn er live debatten op televisie uitgezonden. De verkiezingsavond zelf is live uitgezonden vanuit het gemeentehuis. Dit gebeurt allemaal op ons eigen televisie kanaal waar, als er geen live tv is, de service tekst tv draait of de streekvideo’s van Jan Menger, die een hit zijn op de zondagavond.
