Description
Learn to identify the local flora of the Amazon rainforest of Peru with original illustrations drawn by an indigenous artist. 250 species of plants are grouped by botanical family, with their names in Amazonian Spanish and in the endangered Iskonawa indigenous language of the Ucayali River basin. An alphabetical Spanish-Iskonawa index is provided for finding the plants in the 100 html pages. This application is designed to encourage the revitalization of the highly endangered Iskonawa language and to promote the intergenerational transmission of traditional ecological knowledge. Those who are not Iskonawas will find this application useful for becoming familiar with the flora of Amazonian Peru and for learning the vernacular terms in Spanish for these plant species. This application illustrates the extraordinarily high diversity of flora found in the western Amazon along with the sophisticated traditional ecological knowledge of the Iskonawa people. This educational application was produced within the framework of the project “Interdisciplinary Research Program on Amazonian Linguistic Diversity” financed by the Max Plank Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Estación Científica Chana, and the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, coordinated by Roberto Zariquiey.
