紀曉嵐寫的因果故事序
紀文達公，諱昀，清朝學者、文學家。直隸獻縣（ 今屬河北）人。字曉嵐，一字春帆，晚號石雲。乾隆進士，官至禮部尚書、協辦大學士。曾任四庫全書總篡官，篡定《四庫全書總目提要》。錄其平時所見所聞奇異之事，著《閱微草堂筆記》一書，約三十萬餘言，詳述因果六道輪迴之事證，多系真人真事，偶間有寓言者，然皆詞理周圓，堪為後世之寶鑒。警世勵俗，俾閱者知所戒慎進止。此書膾炙人口，令人拍案驚奇，昔賢評價尤在《聊齋誌異》之上。
瀆職減祿
安邑人宋半塘，曾在鄞縣作官。宋說，鄞縣有位書生很有文才，但他在仕途上卻屢遭困頓，沒有考上功名。
後來這位書生得了一場大病，病中迷離恍惚，夢見自己來到了一處官衙門。根據那裡的情形，他覺察到這地方似乎便是冥司。這時候，對面走來一位官服打扮的人，書生一看，卻是一位老相識，便急忙向他打聽，自己得了這場病，是不是很快就會死？
這位冥官說： “ 你的壽數未盡，但是祿數盡了，恐怕不久就要到這兒來了。 ”
書生說： “ 我這輩子，全靠設館教書餬口，沒幹過傷天害理的事，怎麼祿數倒先盡了？ ”
冥官嘆息說： “ 正因為你是吃教書這碗飯的，而對孩子們的學業、品德放任不問。冥司認為，無功受祿就等於偷盜或浪費糧食，必須扣除應得的俸祿來補償。所以你壽命未盡而祿數先盡。為人師長者，位居 „ 在三（君、親、師） ‟ 之中，享有崇高的榮譽。你收取人家的學費，卻誤人子弟，理應受到最嚴厲的譴責。有官祿的，就要削減官祿。沒有官祿的，就得消減食祿。一絲一毫都計較的很分明。世人往往看到一些飽學之士或通儒大家，有的生活窮困，有的年少夭折，便抱怨天道不公平。可哪裡知道，這些人都是自誤生平，才落得這地步。 ”
書生聽罷，悵然而醒。從此，他的病日重一日，果然沒有治癒的希望。臨死之前，他把夢見的事講給他的親朋好友們聽，並告誡他們要忠於職守，努力從善。這個故事也因此得以流傳於世。
