佛門裏講永明延壽禪師是阿彌陀佛再來，他老人家留下四句話是：「有禪無淨土，十人九蹉路，陰境忽現前，瞥爾隨他去。
無禪有淨土，萬修萬人去，但得見彌陀，何愁不開悟。
有禪有淨土，猶如戴角虎，現世為人師，來生作佛祖。
無禪無淨土，銅床並鐵柱，萬劫與千生，沒個人依怙。」
《佛說無量壽經》：阿彌陀佛在成佛前的一個世間，是妙喜國的國王——世饒王。
在他當國王時非常喜歡聽佛講經說法，他的悟性也很強，佛講的這些道理他很快就理解了。
此後他決定潛心悟道，並放棄了王位，出家為僧，法號法藏比丘。
他認為人在世間，苦海無邊，於是他決定要幫助芸芸眾生脫離苦海。
他感到眾生的苦是來自自己的內心世界和外部的世界。
來自內心世界的苦是因為眾生的貪慾惡欲所致，來自外部世界的苦是由於我們所生存的這個世界本身就是「穢土」。
再說還有輪迴之苦。
他想，如果要有一個沒有任何痛苦的世界該多好呀，在那個世界裡人們的心裡沒有任何貪慾、惡念，眾生的心靈就像泉水一樣純潔。
這樣每個人的內心就會沒有痛苦。痛苦最重要的來源之一內心的痛苦就不存在了。
痛苦還有一個來源就是外部的客觀世界（既我們的生存環境）。
他想，如果在外部環境上沒有四季、寒暑、陰晴的變化，永遠是那麼的涼爽舒適，心地清淨平等，也沒有輪迴的世界，眾生永遠生活在這樣一個極樂世界裡該多好呀。
從此他發下四十八個大願，一定要成就這樣一個世界。
要知道他這願力的力量是宇宙中任何一種力量都無法比擬的，這願力的力量是宇宙中最強大的力量。
經過數劫的努力，他的無邊願力終於幫助他成就了這一宇宙中最理想的世界——西方極樂世界。
從此成為了十方一切諸佛都共同讚譽的阿彌陀佛。
眾生通過念佛一心來到西方極樂世界。
在西方極樂世界，沒有惡道，與諸大菩薩如觀世音菩薩、大勢至菩薩、文殊菩薩、普賢菩薩等聚會一處，能夠聽受佛法，而且壽命無有窮盡，還可以知道各處其他眾生的心念和命運，得到與佛無二的智慧。
