Проспер Мериме (1803 — 1870) — французский писатель и переводчик, один из первых во Франции мастеров новеллы.
Пьеса "Женщина-дьявол, или Искушение Святого Антония" входит в сборник "Театр Клары Газуль", принесшего первую известность Просперу Мериме. Это произведение молодого писателя было связано с мистификацией, вызвавшей немало толков. Мериме выдал свой сборник за сочинение некоей – придуманной им – испанской актрисы и общественной деятельницы Клары Газуль. Ее портрет – изображение самого драматурга в женской одежде.
