Toconao es un pueblo que se encuentra a 40 kilómetros de San Pedro de Atacama. Su nombre significa “lugar de piedras” ya que sus construcciones fueron levantadas con piedra liparita. Frente a la plaza central está la Iglesia y Campanario de San Lucas que datan originalmente del siglo XVIII.Este es el escenario donde se desarrolló la cultura atacameña. Al sur de San Pedro se accede al centro del impresionante Salar de Atacama. Durante el recorrido es posible fotografiar y apreciar la vista a los volcanes Licancabur y Lascar entre otros atractivos de singular belleza, siguiendo por la misma ruta se llega al poblado de Toconao y se continúa hasta el salar, se finaliza en la laguna de Chaxa la cual es habitada por tres tipos de flamencos y un gran número de aves migratorias.
