道教音乐，作为一种古老的宗教音乐，在曲式和情调的内涵上无不渗透着道教的基本信仰和美学思想，形成自己独特的格局。道乐主要用于颂赞神仙、祈福禳灾、超度亡灵和修持养炼，曲调形式上有“阳韵”和“阴韵”之分，“阳韵”多用于早坛功课和祥祈性法事，“阴韵”多用于晚坛功课和超度法事。其美学思想反映了道教追求长生久视和清静无为，既出世又人世，情调庄严肃穆，双不乏清幽恬静，表现召神遣将时气势磅礴，表现降妖驱魔时威武果敢，祈福祝庆时欢乐轻快，赞颂神仙时优美恬静，而表现祈祷养炼时悠扬缥缈……全真教的道乐有“十方韵”与“地方韵”之别，“十方韵”是指全国道教全真派宫观都通用的道教音韵，又称“全真正韵”；“地方韵”指在某一地区流行和使用的道教音韵。在道教的斋醮和其他活动时配合使用的音乐。早期道教科仪中的道教音乐资料现存较少，北魏明元帝神瑞二年（415）寇谦之所得的云中音诵,即“华夏颂”、“步虚声”，是道教音乐较早的书面记载。唐代道教因受帝王的推崇，道教音乐也受到重视，高宗曾令乐工制作道调。玄宗不但诏道士、大臣广制道曲，还在宫廷内道场上亲自教道士“步虚声韵”。
唐代道教音乐在吸收当时的民间音乐、西域音乐以及佛教音乐的基础上，逐步发展和提高。到北宋时，则产生了道教音乐的曲谱集《玉音法事》，其中共记录从唐代传至宋代的道教音乐曲谱50首，这是目前能见到的最早一本道教音乐的声乐曲谱集（现存的是明代道藏的版本，宋代版本已佚）。但该谱采用的曲线记谱法，至今尚未能确译其音调。南宋时，道教音乐在民间广泛流传。据《无上黄大斋立成仪》卷五十七记载，当时的道教音乐对于声乐形式和器乐形式的运用已经比较讲究悦耳动听。明代的道教音乐,由于洪武七年（1374）道门科仪去繁就简,更加规范和统一,而且又有新的发展,进入了定型时期。此时出现的道教音乐谱集《大明御制玄教乐章》，采用传统的工尺记谱法记谱，共记录道曲14首。
另据《大明玄教立成斋醮仪》、《大明御制玄教乐章》及《圣母孔雀明王经》等有关道教音乐的记载，明代道教音乐既有承袭唐、宋、元三代之旧乐，又有吸收南北曲音乐的新制道曲，甚至连民间音乐如“清江引”、“一定金”、“采茶歌”等曲调皆为道教音乐所吸收。清初叶梦珠辑《阅世编》卷九中谓道教法事“引商刻羽,合乐笙歌,竟同优戏”。以上说明古时道教音乐已有一定的艺术水平。近代道教音乐，基本上承袭明代以来的音乐传统，是中国传统文化的遗产之一。在20世纪50年代之前，江南及南方诸省中，看道场欣赏道教音乐，是农民文化生活中的盛事。
道乐由声乐和器乐两部分组成，表演形式多种多样，包括独唱、齐唱、独奏、合奏、伴奏等形式，颂、赞、步虚、偈是单独的曲式，各种曲式贯通搭配，组成整个法事活动。
道乐中的器乐，几乎包括了汉民族乐器的全部，用得较多的是钟、鼓、磬、钹、铛、木鱼等打击乐，笙、管、笛、箫等吹管乐，古琴、二胡、板胡、阮等弹拔乐。
道教十分注重道乐的功能，如道教经典《太平经》就提出道教音乐的“治身”、“守形”、“顺念”、“致思”、“却灾”等功能，认为道乐可使奉道者理入清虚之境而得到心灵净化，道乐能通神灵、驱邪魔、禳灾患。而今道教音乐作为中华文化遗产的一部分，正是遵循这样的音乐理论，为人祈福禳灾，为国祈祷太平，为社会增进和谐，追求一种乐人、乐治、乐天地、乐神灵的理想境界。
