The best example for why he is said to be the saving god is the help offered to Gajendran, the elephant.Gajendran used to offer Lotus flower to Sriman Narayanan daily from a small pond nearby. One day when it was about to pluck the flower, a crocodile caught the leg of the elephant. Gajendran seeked the help of Sriman Narayanan. It is the duty of the great god to help his bhaktas irrespective of the caste, religion, thing etc. At once, he came along with Sudharsana Alwar on top of Garudan. Sriman Narayanan provoked the Chakkaram on the crocodile, killed it and thereby rescued the elephant. This action clearly explains the greatness of Chakkarathalwar and how helpful he is towards his bhaktas.
