Conhecido também como galo-do-mato, foguinho, tico-tico-rei-vermelho,
vinte-um-pintado, tico-fogo, tico-vermelho, sangue de boi (Rio Grande do Sul),
sangrinho (interior de São Paulo) Pavãozinho e tico-tico-pimenta.
Nome Científico
Seu nome científico significa: do (grego) korus, koruthus, koruphe = capacete,
coroa da cabeça; e de spingus, spiza, spizo : tentilhão, pássaro; e do (latim) cristatus,
cristatum, crista : com crista, com topete, crista de plumas, pluma.
Características
Medindo cerca de 13,5 centímetros de comprimento,
tem tamanho semelhante ao do pardal e pesa entre 11 e 18 gramas.
Sua coloração é marrom escura na parte superior e vermelha nas partes inferiores e na cabeça,
especialmente no macho, que apresenta uma coloração intensa e um topete vermelho com uma faixa negra.
Ambos os sexos apresentam uma linha branca circundando os olhos.
A coloração das fêmeas não tem tanto brilho e são mais pardacentas.
Hábitos
Apesar de sua beleza o tico-tico-rei, não é uma ave que costuma chamar muita atenção,
principalmente por causa de seu comportamento discreto e solitário.
O macho só exibe completamente seu belo topete quando está excitado ou ao cantar.
Vive em bordas de matas secundárias, cerrados, campos, cafezais e pomares,
geralmente em locais sombreados, capoeiras ralas e baixas.
