مراسم عاشورا در افغانستان سابقه بسیار دارد، اما درنحوه برگزاری این مراسم در سال های اخیر تغییرات زیادی رونما شده است. در گذشته های نه چندان دور مراسم عاشورا بیشتر در حسینیه ها برگزار می شد و مردم با تجمع در حسینیه ها پای منبر روحانیون می نشستند، سینه می زدند و با گوش دادن به روضه خوان ها می گریستند. به این ترتیب برگزاری مراسم عاشورا صرفا به حسینیه ها محدود بود و این مراسم عزا داری ١٣ روزه بسیار با سادگی برگزار می شد.اما درسال های اخیر مراسم عاشورا از حسینه ها بیرون زده است. عاشورا امروزه بیشتر از حسینیه ها در سطح شهر تجلیل می شود، درشهرهای عمدتا شیعه نشین افغانستان، در چهار راه ها دروازه های ویژه ای ساخته شده است. این دروازه ها از خوازه های فلزی که بنا ها هنگام ساختن ساختمانهای بلند از آن استفاده می کنند، ساخته شده و سپس روی آن پارچه سیاه کشیده شده روی این پارچه ها عکس هائى از شهدای کربلا نصب شده است. بسیار از این دروازه ها شبیه هم اند.
ماشین های شخصی اکثرا پرچم های خاصی را حمل می کنند که روی آنها نوشته است ” یا حسین شهید” یا اباعبدالله” یا قمر بنی هاشم” یا شهید کربلا” و ده ها شعا و عکس ویژه ای محرم.
در پایه ها یا تیرهای برق، دیوارهای بعضی از ساختمانهای عمومی، درو پنجره خانه ها و مغازه ها نیز پرچم ها وشعار های مشابهی به چشم می خورد.
