A Paróquia Catedral Montes Claros Nossa Senhora Aparecida foi criada no dia 29 de janeiro de 1950, desmembrada da Nossa Senhora e São José (Matriz). Na época era Bispo Dom Antônio de Almeida Morais Júnior, o terceiro na linha sucessória e cujo governo ocorreu de 1948 a 1951, a quem coube nomear primeiro pároco Padre Silvestre Isidoro Clasen, que governou de 1950 a 1952.Seguiram-se a ele os padres Gustavo Ferreira de Sousa (1953 – 1954), Paulo Emílio Pimenta (1954),Agostinho José João Beckauser (1954 – 1960), João Machado Gomes (1960 – 1965), Joaquim Cesário dos Santos Macedo (1965 – 1967), Tarcísio Guimarães Mendes (1967), José Osmar Teixeira (1967 – 1969), Raymundo Tadeu de Carvalho (1969 – 1979), João Machado Gomes (1979 – 1985), Raymundo Tadeu de Carvalho (1985 – 1988), Luiz Martins Parente (1988 – 1993), Antônio Alencar Monteiro (1993 – 2002) e Dorival Souza Barreto Júnior (2002-2013) e Padre Waldomiro Soares que tomou posse em janeiro de 2013
Trata-se de uma paróquia atípica. Isso porque atende a população que reside na área central da cidade, distribuída nas comunidades do Santuário do Bom Jesus e São José, enquanto é comum nas demais abranger áreas maiores, inclusive bairros periféricos. Existem ainda muitos “paroquianos afetivos”, aqueles que, apesar de morarem em localidades pertencentes a outras paróquias, freqüentam a Catedral. Finalmente há o fato de ali estar localizado o templo Catedral, igreja-mãe da Arquidiocese de Montes Claros e um dos mais belos cartões postais do município
