GIGI tumbuh pertama kali atas prakarsa Aria Baron, Thomas Ramadhan, Ronald Fristianto, Dewa Budjana, dan Armand Maulana. Waktu itu 22 Maret 1994. Ada cerita bahwa dua tahun sebelumnya, Dewa Budjana sudah menyimpan keinginan untuk membentuk sebuah band dengan dua pemain gitar. Keinginan tersebut terwujud dengan terbentuknya GIGI. Sebelum bergabung dalam jajaran GIGI, Baron (gitar), Thomas (bass), Ronald (drum), Budjana (gitar), dan Armand (vokal) sudah terlebih dahulu malang-melintang di padang musik Indonesia. Kelimanya menceburkan diri ke kolam kreativitas yang sama, tempat mereka harus mengolah daya cipta dan menyelaraskan gaya bermusik. Saling-taut nalar dan rasa tidak tercipta dengan segera. Album pertama yang mereka lahirkan menjadi saksi betapa masing-masing personel masih bermain menuruti kata hatinya sendiri-sendiri. Warna musik yang mereka usung masih belum terang dan jernih betul.Baru satu tahun berkarya GIGI sudah didera masalah perdana. Setelah album Dunia (1995) dirilis, Aria Baron memutuskan untuk hengkang dari GIGI untuk melanjutkan sekolah di Amerika, justru pada saat band tersebut mulai merasakan angin segar buah kerja keras mereka dalam meramu musik. Lagu “Janji” dalam album tersebut berhasil melejitkan GIGI ke atas panggung industri musik Indonesia sebagai grup yang diperhitungkan keberadaan dan musikalitasnya.
