Description

Homer Player is an audiobook player for the elderly. Its simple user interface makes it easy to operate for seniors and people with poor vision (or both).

Features:
- simplicity: just a list of audiobooks and a "start" button,
- flip-to-stop: there's no need to press any buttons to pause playback, just put the device face down on a table,
- low-vision friendly interface: book titles are read aloud and high contrast, large UI elements are used,
- adjust speed: slow down playback for those hard of hearing.

Single application mode (kiosk):
With this mode enabled the user cannot exit the application so they don't need to know how to use a tablet.
Perfect for building a dedicated audiobook player for your grandparents.

Questions & Answers

Q: What is an APK File?

A: Just like Windows (PC) systems use an .exe file for installing software, Android does the same. An APK file is the file format used for installing software on the Android operating system.

Q: If I install an APK from this website, will I be able to update the app from the Play Store?

A: Yes, absolutely. The Play Store installs APKs it downloads from Google's servers, and sideloading from a site like ApkClean.net goes through a very similar process, except you're the one performing the downloading and initiating the installation (sideloading).
As soon as the Play Store finds a version of the app newer than the one you've sideloaded, it will commence an update.

Q: Why ApkClean.net can guarantee APK 100% safe?

A: Whenever someone wants to download an APK file from ApkClean.net, we'll check the corresponding APK file on Google Play and allow user download it directly (of course, we'll cache it on our server). If the APK file does not exist on Google Play, we'll search it in our cache.

Q: What are Android App permissions?

A: Apps require access to certain systems within your device. When you install an application, you are notified of all of the permissions required to run that application.

5 ★Got this for a senior when limited eyesight and dexterity. She loved it!
5 ★This is a great app that works as described. I can confirm that it works on a Sony C1904 smartphone running Android 4.3. SD card: I created a folder called AudioBooks in the root folder of the the SD card. Some older reviews said you couldn't save to SD card, but the software has been updated to allow reading files from an SD card, even on Android 4.3. Settings: The app ingeniously allows you to access the settings menu by tapping five times on the main screen. This allows you to set things while reducing the chance of the senior from accidentally accessing the settings. Audio files: If your audiobook is made up of multiple mp3 files, the app treats it as one long files, which is perfect. It seamlessly plays there in order. The time counter on the app shows the combined playing time. Kiosk mode: In order to prevent the senior from accidentally going to the home screen of the phone or tablet, you can turn on Kiosk mode. There are two flavors of Kiosk Mode. With "Full" you can totally block the senior from existing the app. With "Simple" only the navigation bar disappears. Unfortunately, on Android 4.3 you only get the "Simple" option. Conclusion: Great app. Love it.
5 ★Ideal for my partially sighted Father. Has all the functions we need (I.e as few as possible) and very straightforward to use. Thank you Marcin.
5 ★This is exactly what I was looking for! My girlfriend's grandmother has recently lost most of her sight and this is perfect. My only complaint is that you have to upload the books directly to the tablet and it won't read from the SD card. Other than that great job!!!
5 ★Very Promising! For the past week I have been searching for an audio book reader with a simple interface, suited for the visually impaired. Strangely enough, those readers are NOT designed for what I believed to be the main target group. Even the best one had too many buttons and was not suitable for my mother-in-law. This Homer Player, even in its initial stage and with only a basic start/stop button, is already functional enough so that I am convinced that my relative will be able to handle it. And the Kiosk mode would just be awesome. Kudos, kind regards.
5 ★I have an elderly mother, and I wanted to give her the opportunity to listen to audio books. There's nothing much out there that matched her needs. So I bought her an Asus ZenPad C7.0 and added HomerPlayer to it. I needed only a little support from Marcin to set the tablet to kiosk mode. So far it works a treat. No evidence of Malware that someone else suggested.
5 ★I stumbled upon this while browsing another website to make a one button audio player using a raspberry pi for my grandmother. This is so much easier to setup and use. This is perfect for my grandmother who has difficulty using even the simplest devices to listen to her media. Can you add an option for continuous play so it doesn't stop when it plays the last file in the folder and the ability to swipe back and forth between files without having to press stop first. Great job! this is going to make a lot of old people very happy.
1 ★THIS APP IS MALWARE, DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT, YOU CANNOT EXIT IT, IT TRAPS YOU
5 ★My beloved neighbor is 92 and her vision is adequate for the largest of print fonts and little else. She loved to read and for most of her life did so - voraciously. That light of joy in her life dimmed - diminished by her failing vision. Like many seniors she had little regard for modern technology, and I was at both pain and loss to convince her that being read to could be nearly as satisfying as reading for herself, and that a little handheld tablet could bring the old joy back into her life. Along came the Homer Player. An answer to my prayers. An answer to her revulsion to technology- carrying with it vocal recitatives of novels. She is delighted (after a short spell of acclimatization), as am I that she is so pleased. The player is as simple to use as advertised, and my major efforts have been involved in the amassing of material which is compatible with her interests and tastes. You simply cannot do better for seniors who have lost sight of the things they love to read.
5 ★This works great for folks that have vision or technology problems. In order to add books remotely, l have left the phone's wifi on and use the app DriveSync to add books from a Google Drive account linked to the phone.
5 ★Your app is a God sent to my 91 year old mom! We all love you from the heart! Where can we make a donation? Thanks a million! Eddie & Julie
5 ★This is an extremely useful app because it allows elderly and physically challenged people to listen to audio books on an Android smartphone or tablet without all the extraneous "bells and whistles" that cause so many problems - like inadvertent screen touches or button pushes that shut down the audio or cause other things to happen. I helped a non-computer-literate friend in a retirement home use my old Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 to listen to his first audio book (14 hours). After you set up the app and load the MP3 files (borrowed free through your local library on a system generally available throughout the U.S. - the Overdrive app or system), it's easy for an elderly person to use the device. The app shows a screen with a simple stop/start icon bordered by simple fast forward >> and rewind << icons. If you need to stop the recording, you also can just turn your device over (screen side down), and it stops. Mr. Simonides has designed a great app, doesn't ask for any payment and has been extremely helpful in answering my questions via email. If your device has Android 5.0, you can even set it to "kiosk" mode to prevent the user from inadvertently exiting the app.
