Surah Al-Fiil adalah surah ke-105 berdasarkan susunan mushaf dan surah ke-19 sesuai urutan pewahyuan Al-Quran. Surah ini dinamai Al-Fil karena menceritakan tentang Ashab Al-Fil (pasukan bergajah). Surah Al-Fil berbeda dengan kebanyakan surah Al-Quran, seluruh kisahnya diturunkan secara keseluruhan pada satu surah. Dari sisi isi, surah Al-Fil termasuk surah Al-Qishar Al-Mufasshalat (17 surah terakhir Al-Quran ditambah surah Al-Fatihah). Surah ini adalah salah satu surah juz ammah di hizb ke-4 juz 30 Al-Quran.
Surah ini bercerita tentang sebuah peristiwa besar sejarah dengan ayat yang sangat pendek namun kukuh dan jelas tentang bagaimana Allah Swt menurunkan bala kepada pasukan Abraha – pemimpin Habasya yang ingin menyerang dan menghancurkan Ka’bah. Dan Dia mengirimkan kepada mereka burung yang berbondong-bondong, yang melempari mereka dengan batu (berasal) dari tanah yang terbakar. (untuk diketahui bahwa yang dimaksud dengan ababil yang disebutkan pada ayat ketiga surah ini adalah rombongan burung yang berbondong-bondong datangnya. Ababil bukanlah nama burung tertentu).
أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡفِيلِ (١) أَلَمۡ يَجۡعَلۡ كَيۡدَهُمۡ فِى تَضۡلِيلٍ۬ (٢) وَأَرۡسَلَ عَلَيۡہِمۡ
(طَيۡرًا أَبَابِيلَ (٣) تَرۡمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ۬ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ۬ (٤) فَجَعَلَهُمۡ كَعَصۡفٍ۬ مَّأۡڪُولِۭ (٥
Artinya:
"Apakah kamu tidak memperhatikan bagaimana Tuhanmu telah bertindak terhadap tentara bergajah? [2] (1) Bukankah Dia telah menjadikan tipu daya mereka [untuk menghancurkan Ka’bah] itu sia-sia?, (2) Dan Dia mengirimkan kepada mereka burung yang berbondong-bondong, (3) yang melempari mereka dengan batu [berasal] dari tanah yang terbakar, (4) lalu Dia menjadikan mereka seperti daun-daun yang dimakan [ulat]. (5)"
