католической церкви.
Будучи подростком, Грег Бойд стал атеистом. Благодаря этому, он себя чувствовал свободным от страха перед смертью и ада. Он искал смысл жизни в восточных религиях и в наркотиках. В 1973ом году, после отрезвляющего опыта с наркотиками, он решил больше их не принимать.
Вместо этого, он начал интересоваться философией, и пытался там найти смысл жизни. Бойд сам считал, что «религия, это всего лишь костыль для слабых людей». Один друг бросил ему вызов, переворачивая эту фразу: «А что, если твоё неверие всего лишь костыль, потому что ты не справляешься с истиной, что всем нам придётся отвечать перед нашим Творцом?» Это заставило Бойда думать.
В 1974ом году, после 17ого дня рождения, Грег Бойд стал последователем Христа.
После уверования, Бойд продолжал учебу по философии и теологии. В 1988 году Бойд получил докторскую степень (summa cum laude) в теологической/духовной семинарии Принстонского Университета.
