Tình yêu nam nữ hay tham ái (gọi theo danh từ trong đạo Phật) là khái niệm thuộc về tình cảm. Chúng ta đã biết, tình cảm là điều không thể định nghĩa được. Trong bài Từ bi, chúng ta cũng đã khẳng định Tâm từ là lòng thương yêu, là cái gì không thể định nghĩa được. Tình cảm nằm ở mức độ sâu hơn ý thức. Ở ý thức, chúng ta có ngôn ngữ gọi tên, có suy luận, có sự diễn đạt. Còn những trạng thái của tình cảm lại nằm ở cấp độ sâu hơn nên ngôn ngữ của ý thức không thể định nghĩa được. Con người chỉ có thể nhận thấy biểu hiện của nó và dựa vào đó biết rằng mình đã yêu. Đối với những lớp tình cảm còn nằm sâu trong vô thức, chúng ta lại càng không thể dùng tâm để điễn tả được.
