จิ้งหรีด หรือ จังหรีด เป็นแมลงจำพวกหนึ่ง อยู่ในวงศ์ Gryllidaeจิ้งหรีดถือเป็นแมลงที่มีขนาดลำตัวปานกลางเมื่อเทียบกับแมลงโดยทั่วไป มีปีก 2 คู่ คู่หน้าเนื้อปีกหนากว่าคู่หลัง ปีกเมื่อพับจะหักเป็นมุมที่ด้านข้างของลำตัว ปีกคู่หลังบางพับได้แบบพัดสอดเข้าไปอยู่ใต้ปีกคู่หน้า ปากเป็นชนิดกัดกิน หัวกับอกมีขนาดกว้างไล่เลี่ยกัน ขาคู่หลังใหญ่และแข็งแรงใช้สำหรับกระโดด ตัวผู้มีอวัยวะพิเศษสำหรับทำเสียงเป็นฟันเล็ก ๆ อยู่ตามเส้นปีกบริเวณกลางปีก ใช้กรีดกับแผ่นทำเสียงที่อยู่บริเวณท้องปีกของปีกอีกข้างหนึ่ง อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะที่เป็นที่รู้จักกันดีของจิ้งหรีด ขณะที่ตัวเมียจะไม่สามารถทำเสียงดังนั้นได้ และจะมีอวัยวะสำหรับใช้วางไข่เป็นท่อยาว ๆ บริเวณก้นคล้ายเข็ม เห็นได้ชัดเจน
จิ้งหรีดสามารถพบได้ในทั่วโลก โดยเฉพาะในเขตร้อนชื้น พบแล้วประมาณ 900 ชนิด ในประเทศไทยก็พบได้หลายชนิด จิ้งหรีดเป็นแมลงที่กัดกินพืชชนิดต่าง ๆ เป็นอาหาร สามารถกินได้หลายชนิด มักออกหากินในเวลากลางคืน มักจะอาศัยโดยการขุดรูอยู่ในดินหรือทราย ในที่ ๆ เป็นพุ่มหญ้า แต่ก็มีจิ้งหรีดบางจำพวกเหมือนกันที่อาศัยบนต้นไม้เป็นหลัก
สำหรับในประเทศไทย พบจิ้งหรีดได้ทั่วทุกภูมิภาค ชนิดของจิ้งหรีดที่พบ ได้แก่ จิ้งหรีดทองดำ (Gryllus bimaculatus), จิ้งหรีดทองแดง (G. testaceus), จิ้งโกร่ง หรือ จิ้งกุ่ง (Brachytrupes portentosus) เป็นต้น
จิ้งหรีดเป็นแมลงที่มีวงจรชีวิตแบบไม่ต้องผ่านการเป็นหนอนหรือดักแด้ ตัวอ่อนที่เกิดมาจะเหมือนตัวเต็มวัย เพียงแต่ยังไม่มีปีก และมีสีที่อ่อนกว่า ต้องผ่านการลอกคราบเสียก่อน จึงจะมีปีกและทำเสียงได้ จิ้งหรีดจะผสมพันธุ์เมื่อเป็นตัวเต็มวัย การผสมพันธุ์และวางไข่แต่ละรุ่นจะใช้เวลาประมาณ 15 วันต่อครั้ง ในแต่ละรุ่น เมื่อหมดการวางไข่รุ่นสุดท้ายแล้วตัวเมียก็จะตาย โดยตัวผู้จะทำเสียงโดยยกปีกคู่หน้าถูกันให้เกิดเสียง เพื่อเรียกตัวเมีย จังหวะเสียงจะดังเมื่อตัวเมียเข้ามาหา บริเวณที่ตัวผู้อยู่ ตัวผู้จะเดินไปรอบ ๆ ตัวเมียประมาณ 2-3 รอบ ช่วงนี้จังหวะเสียงจะเบาลง แล้วตัวเมียจะขึ้นคร่อมตัวผู้ จากนั้นตัวผู้จะยื่นอวัยวะเพศแทงไปที่อวัยวะเพศตัวเมีย หลังจากนั้นประมาณ 14 นาที ถุงน้ำเชื้อก็จะฝ่อลง แล้วตัวเมียจะใช้ ขาเขี่ยถุงน้ำเชื้อทิ้งไป เมื่อไข่ได้รับการปฏิสนธิแล้ว ตัวเมียใช้อวัยวะวางไข่ที่แทงลงในดินที่มีลักษณะเรียวยาวคล้ายเมล็ดข้าวสาร ใช้เวลาประมาณ 7 วัน ก็จะฟักออกเป็นตัวอ่อน ตลอดอายุไข่จิ้งหรีดตัวเมียสามารถวางไข่ได้ตั้งแต่ 600-1,000 ฟอง ซึ่งจะวางไข่เป็นรุ่น ๆ ได้ประมาณ 4 รุ่น
จิ้งหรีดถือเป็นแมลงที่เป็นศัตรูพืชอย่างหนึ่ง แต่ก็มีความเกี่ยวพันธ์กับมนุษย์ในแง่ของเลี้ยงเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงมาอย่างยาวนาน ในหลายวัฒนธรรม ในหลายประเทศ มีการเลี้ยงจิ้งหรีดเพื่อฟังเสียงร้อง และเลี้ยงไว้สำหรับการกัดกัน โดยถือว่าเป็นแมลงจำพวกหนึ่งที่สามารถนำมาต่อสู้กันได้อย่างด้วงกว่าง อีกทั้งยังปรากฏในนิทานอีสปในเรื่อง มดกับจิ้งหรีด เป็นต้น
