Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music is American recording artist Ray Charles’s studio album which was released in April 1962 as his fifth LP (Long Play) album with ABC-Paramount Records. Charles performed the recording sessions for the album during the early to mid-part of February 1962 in New York City’s Capitol Studios and Hollywood’s United Recording Studios. The production of the album was handled completely by Charles, with the collaboration of a prominent conductor (Sid Feller).
Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music was a clear departure from Charles's prior work, as he brought attention to folk, country, and Western music standards by covering and redoing song styles of his time, which include pop, jazz, and rhythm and blues.
The album became an instant commercial success and improved Charles’ mainstream appeal, soon after his stay with Atlantic Records. Through this album, Charles gained significant airplay on both country and R&B radio stations as well as recognition within the pop market.
Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music has been regarded as a landmark album in American music; other critics looked upon it as the best studio album of Ray Charles. The album's beautiful synthesis of country music and soul helped bent and break through racial barriers in popular music, during a time when the African-American civil rights struggle was on its peak.
